18th Annual Community Leadership Breakfast

New Horizons Foundation was pleased to have honored John & Gloria Golden, Karen Hansen Simon and Kelly L. Traver, Esq. at our 18th Annual Community Leadership Breakfast on Thursday, October 25th at the Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel. Each year this award is given to individuals selected by past honorees for their spirit, dedication and leadership in fostering a better life for all residents of the Hudson Valley.

This year's Honorees Included:

Gloria K. Golden
Gloria K. Golden was born in Trenton, New Jersey and grew up in Herkimer, New York. She attended St. Lawrence University and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. In 1946, Gloria moved with her family to Hyde Park, New York and met her husband, John Golden. They married in 1950 and recently celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary.

Aside from being the proud parent of two children, Jonathon and Elizabeth, she has also been an Organist at St. James Church for many years and served on the boards of the Hyde Park Free Library and the Dutchess County Heart Fund. She remains active at St. James church and the Hyde Park Meals on Wheels.

John W. Golden Jr.
John Golden Jr. was born in Hyde Park, New York where he graduated in the first class of F.D.R High School in 1941. He excelled at sports and played Football, Basketball and Baseball. John later served in World War II as a member of the Army Air Force 491st Bomb Group. After the war, John graduated from Syracuse University and married his wife, Gloria, in 1950. They have two children, Jonathan and Elizabeth. John was later employed by Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. However, after eight years, he formed Golden & Golden Building Company, Inc. which still operates today.

In his many years of service to Hyde Park, John has become a Life member of the Hyde Park Fire Department and a Warden and Vestryman of St. James Church. He has also served on the following boards: Hudson River Housing, Winnikee Land Trust, Northern Dutchess Hospital, Northern Dutchess Foundation, Wells Manor, FDR Roosevelt Education Foundation, Hyde Park Crossroads, where he was also the Chairmen and Hyde Park Planning Board.

Karen Hansen Simon
Karen Hansen Simon is a newly retired partner of Sedore Hudson Valley CPA’s. She has had over 30 years of tax, audit, and professional financial experience as a practicing Certified Public Accountant. She is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the New York State Association of Public Accountants.

Karen originally trained in medical research before returning to school to begin coursework to earn her CPA designation. She entered the field at Lewittes & Co. until forming the firm of Hansen & Dunn CPA’s in 1982. This partnership became Hansen & Arnold CPA’s in 1995 until merging with Sedore in 2001.

Karen has been active in the Dutchess County area through many civic involvements and served on the following Board of Directors: Civic Properties, Inc., Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce, where she was a former chair of the board and member of the Executive Committee, Dutchess-Ulster Division of the American Heart Association and a 2006 Honoree, United Way of Dutchess County, Dutchess County Girl Scouts, YMCA of Dutchess County, Mid-Hudson Civic Center, Inc., Dutchess County Economic Development Corporation, Hudson Valley Pattern for Progress and St. Martin de Porres Church, where she currently serves on its finance committee.

Karen has also been selected for editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Finance & Industry and Who’s Who in American Women. She lives in the City of Poughkeepsie with her husband, Chip Simon, and daughter, Emma.

Kelly L. Traver
Kelly L. Traver was born and raised in Poughkeepsie, New York. She attended Pace University and received her B.B.A. in 1997 and her J.D. from Pace University in 2000. Kelly’s practice is concentrated in the areas of Estate Administration and Estate Planning, Commercial and Residential Banking, and Real Estate. She has lectured at seminars on the topics of real estate, retirement and estate planning.

Kelly is a member of the Mid-Hudson Valley Mortgage Bankers Association and Hudson Valley Estate Planning Council. She is also vice president and past-treasurer of the Mid-Hudson Women's Bar Association. Kelly serves on the Board of Trustees for the Arlington Education Foundation and is the Chair of the Fundraising Committee. She also serves as the chair of the Board of Directors for Dutchess Outreach. Kelly was a recipient of the 2008 Greater Southern Dutchess Chamber of Commerce's 40 under 40 Shaker Award.

Kelly is admitted to the Bar in the States of New York and Connecticut and is a member of the New York State, Dutchess County Bar Association, and Mid-Hudson Women's Bar Associations.
